Haddington Town Centre Design Project – Summer 2017

Building on the aspirations set out by the community in A vision for Haddington town centre  East Lothian Council, the Haddington Community Development Trust, Haddington and District Business Association, Haddington and District Community Council, and Haddington and District Amenity Society are developing a project to improve Haddington Town Centre. ‎

The Vision for Haddington Report argued that:

Haddington’s High Street should be one of the best town squares in Scotland: a vibrant and attractive focus for Town Centre trade and activity. It is not difficult to imagine a bustling space where cafes and shops spread out onto widened pavements, with attractive places for people to meet, linger and enjoy themselves. Getting about on foot should be much easier; car access and parking, whilst important, should be less dominant.

This project is very much a continuation of the Vision initiative, which led to the establishing of the Community Development Trust in early 2013, and which set out a bold agenda to improve our town centres’ streets.

East Lothian Council have established a project steering group to oversee the project. This is made up of representatives from the Haddington Community Development Trust, Haddington Community Council, Haddington Business Association, Haddington and District Amenity Society and the Haddington and Lammermuir Local Area Partnership.

Ironside Farrar have been appointed by East Lothian Council as the Design Team.  An initial walk round the town centre with the consultants – represented by Julian Farrar, Jan Pope and Sam Shortt – took place on 27 April and we now await a programme of events over the summer and early autumn as the consultants develop their thinking and seek community response.

Ironside Farrar have been asked to develop options, priorities, and designs that will have the greatest positive economic and social impact on the Town, ones that will support a flourishing economy and help build a prosperous, accessible, safe, and sustainable Town Centre.”

During the summer and early autumn, Ironside Farrar will run a number of consultation and design events that members of the pubic and the business community can get involved with. The design workshops  will be held in the Town House, Haddington on 1st August, 14th September and 31st October and these will give everyone with an interest in the Town Centre the chance to contribute to the design proposals. Regular project updates and details of events will be available on the HCDT website, as well as in the press and via social media.
